About Cookie Tracking

In this guide, you can read and learn about cookie tracking.

Cookie tracking is today one of the most discussed topics, in terms of data tracking and protection of personal information.

Types of cookies

Cookie tracking works in various ways and there are various types of cookies such as:

  • First-party cookie - placed on the visitors' computer by you as an e-commerce store.

  • Third-party cookie - placed by us, on your visitors' computer for us to recognize the users when they browse your e-commerce shop.

Cookies are also often described and grouped as Session cookies, Persistent cookies or Secure cookies etc.

A cookie is actually not much more than a long sequence of numbers and letters. It is used to identify the individual browser.

Lifetime

By default, they have a set lifetime on which they will expire in the browser if not the cookie "owner" does renew it.

The lifetime is determined by the "owner" of the cookie, in this particular example by Hello Retail.

On our tracking cookie, we set a lifetime of 1 year. We do this because our main offering is to be able to provide your customers with the best possible personalized shopping experience, so we need to be able to recognize the visitor for a long period.

Of course the user will have the standard opportunities to opt-out of any cookie tracking, by either removing their cookies, do their shopping in a private browser session or by not accepting cookies on your shop - as the EU cookie policies require. If you are located outside of the EU, you might have other rules in terms of providing sufficient cookie information.

You can read more about how to have the user opt-out of the tracking without removing the Hello Retail service entirely.

Note Your solution will just not be personalized then.

In Hello Retail, we do all we can to adapt new changes to the cookie rules and regulations, and we are in dialogue with many local trade and industry associations to ensure our best advisory capabilities - even so, please be aware you as an e-commerce owner is solely responsible for what and how you handle cookie tracking and information on your website.
